Soap Nuts
Native to India and Nepal yet found around the world Soap Nuts are gaining popularity as an eco friendly hypoallergenic alternative to chemical based detergents. Soap Nuts contain Saponin, a natural detergent from which conventional soap is derived from. The Soap Nut absorbs water and releases saponins into wash water, removing dirt, oil and grime. It only take about 6 Soap Nuts to a cotton muslin bag to wash a load of laundry and can be uses over and over again until the nuts loose their brown color. This usually about a dozen loads and the Nuts can be composted afterwards. You can add a scoop of baking soda for large heavily soiled loads. Late Summer Forage
In this short video I examine a few wild edibles found on a roadside in New York State. After watching I realize how little I covered on but at the same time there is so much to say about each plant as far as it's applications, uses of each plant part, harvest techniques, storage and the list goes on. This is not meant as a definite identification and wild edible guide as much as an introduction. Feel free to ask questions!

Tooth Powder over Tooth Paste
Herbal
Mint Tooth Powder is made with a powerful blend of herbs that not only
freshen bad breath and whiten teeth but also maintain healthy and
disease free gums and teeth. The herbs are antibacterial, antiseptic,
antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory; used for centuries to maintain oral
health. Most of the herbs work to prevent and heal oral infections or
disease including cavities, gingivitis, plaque and periodontitis (an
inflammatory disease that can destroy the bones, gums, and tissue that
maintain teeth). The herbs are balanced with essential oils such as Tea
Tree which is a potent antimicrobial that also fights bacteria causing
tooth decay and gum disease including gingivitis.
To
use, wet a toothbrush and shake off excess water. Gently press into
powder. Brush as normal. Or wet toothbrush, scoop powder from jar with a
spoon, hold brush over jar, sprinkle toothpowder onto brush, brush
teeth.

No Fillers
Using organically grown, sustainably harvested and fair trade ingredients is paramount to the creation of all Herbaceutikals. Next is intention. Every ingredient serves a purpose to the desired application. Some people ask for our deodorant in a stick form because they don't like to use their fingers. Honestly Stick deodorants tend to harbor bacteria and Arm pits deserve a little massage too. Sure natural deodorant in a jar may be unconventional but it works and it has just the ingredients needed to keep you smelling sweet all day. No fillers. Just Pure and Simple.

Harvesting Dandelion
Dandelion root
is a diuretic and cleansing/strengthening to the kidneys and liver.
Harvest mature plant roots in the spring or fall when the ground is
moist. Harvest roots from new plants anytime before they flower. Early
morning or late day in the third quarter of the moon
is best if you intend on storing. Soak roots to loosen soil and clean
thoroughly. Cut them in quarters lengthways then dice. Lay between paper
bags or sun dry to store.
Pairs well with #burdock #ginger #chicory #licorice #milkthistle #anise #cinnamon #tumeric

Chamomile
There are 3 types of chamomile
and they all share the same properties. It is commonly used for
indigestion, heartburn, insomnia, anxiety, stress, headache, and
irritable bowel syndrome. An infusion can be topically use to cleanse
and relieve the discomfort of insect bites, wounds, itching, and other
skin irritations. Or orally for mouth ulcers and canker sores. It even
helps control periodontal diseases. Used with witch hazel, it can even
help eczema. For children chamomile tea to treat eye infections such as pinkeye
and blocked tear-ducts. Many people believe that chamomile improves the
elasticity of the skin, thus improving the aging complexion. When
sipped slowly while nursing a baby, the tea can help prevent baby's
colic and promote peaceful rest. Chamomile is known to increase
production of white blood cells, stimulates the memory and respiratory
system, and helps overcome exhaustion, fights fungal invaders, soothes
upset stomachs, helps mend torn tissue, kills staphylococcus and
streptococcus bacteria, and generally protects and heals the body.
Our organically homegrown chamomile is featured in the facial toners, massage oil and herbal tea blends.

Plant Identification
Teaching
the little one to identify plantain leaves and how to harvest them. We
only take a third of a patch at a time. Also known as white man'a foot
by the Native American Indians, plantago major is one of the most
important ingredients in the healing skin salve.
"The
leaves are also used to dress wounds, dog and insect bites, to stop
bleeding and prevent infections. Held in the mouth it heals ulcers,
strengthens the gums, relieves throat infections, irritations, coughs
and nosebleeds. A poultice of the fresh leaves cures herpes, especially
on the face, syphilitic sores and parasitic skin diseases. It is also
good for teething babies."- Rashan Abdul Hakim

Repurpose Rosemary
Taking it slow this morning And taking the time to cut select sprigs from this dried #rosemary bush to use as #bbq skewers. Open fire cooking is all we do in the summer🌿🌿🌿
"Arabian
physicians used rosemary to comfort the brain, strengthen the memory,
and restore speech...in times of epidemic and plagues in Europe,
rosemary was burned, and simmered in open pots to kill germs and viruses
in the air thus preventing them from spreading. Rosemary was the key in
controlling the spread of disease in Europe because it's ability to
kill airborn germs on contact made it a natural germicide and
disinfectant."- Rashan Abdul Hakim

Majestic Sage
Beautiful garden #sage bush I had to prune at the new plot. So much sage, so little time..
Sage
has one of the longest histories of use of any culinary or medicinal
herb. Ancient Egyptians used it as a fertility drug (Bown, 1995). In the
first century C.E. Greek physician Dioscorides reported that the
aqueous decoction of sage stopped bleeding of wounds and cleaned ulcers
and sores. He also recommended sage juice in warm water for hoarseness
and coughs. It was used by herbalists externally to treat sprains,
swelling, ulcers, and bleeding. Internally, a tea made from sage leaves
has had a long history of use to treat sore throats and coughs; often by
gargling. It was also used by herbalists for rheumatism, excessive
menstrual bleeding, and to dry up a mother's milk when nursing was
stopped. It was particularly noted for strengthening the nervous system,
improving memory, and sharpening the senses. Sage was officially listed
in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1840 to 1900.

Warming Tea Blend
Spicy Kukicha tea to start the dAy. #ginger #anise #licorice #cinnamon #plantbased #medicinal
Kukicha, also known as twig tea or 3 year tea, is aged after harvest and roasted. #Kukicha #tea
is also known as three years tea because the stems and branches that
are used to do it have been in the tea plant for at least three years,
so they have lost virtually all of the caffeine (only kukicha tea is
between 0.5 and 1% caffeine) but, however, have absorbed all the
minerals and vitamins around them.
Twig tea has more than twice the vitamin C of oranges and very high in calcium.
Kukicha is also high in: • Iron
• Zinc
• Selenium
• Copper
• Manganese
• Fluoride
• B vitamins
• Vitamin A
• Theanine
• Catechins
• Flavonoids
• Amino acids
It
is a really alkalizing drink, Neutralizing the acidity and tannins
kukicha contributes to proper digestion of grains and vegetables,
enhancing its benefits and vitamins.
It has a high calcium content: a cup of tea contains up to 13 times more calcium than a glass of milk

Arnica Montana
Native Americans referred to arnica as mountain tobacco and leopard’s bane, and used the plant for sprains, bruises and wounds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, physicians and health practitioners used arnica for contusions, bruised muscles, painful breasts, chronic sores and abscesses.
Arnica is available both as a herbal oil or homeopathic cream, however herbal preparations have shown much better results than homeopathic products when tested in lab studies. Arnica oils, gels and creams are the most popular herbal sports medicines. It is very effective if used immediately after an injury. Arnica accelerates the healing process by moving waste-bound fluids out and moving cleansing fluids and platelets into the affected area. The anti-inflamatory properties of arnica are due to its sesquiterpene lactones. These chemicals cause a reduction of inflammation by blocking the actions of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
The antimicrobial properties of arnica make it useful for minor skin irritations where infection is possible. Topical use for sprains, bruises, aches, sore muscles, hematoma, dislocations, contusions, edema due to fracture, rheumatic muscle and joint problems, cerebral trauma, headaches, paresis, semiparesis, inflammation due to insect bites, and superficial phlebitis, bacterial infections, skin cancer, bronchitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis. Arnica should not be applied to broken or burned skin.
